Take it to the limit. One more time. Print E-mail

With apologies to the Eagles, today’s 22 miler took me to the limit – again.  These Sunday long runs are the hardest part of training when you are just getting back on track.  It takes awhile for these runs to come easily (which they finally do).  But step away from this type of training for a little while, and one pays the price.

When I first started training for a marathon in 2002, the weekly long run would leave me lying on the floor, unable to do anything else for the rest of the day.  While I’m not back to that level completely, I was thinking of lying down during my last mile.

And the whole day has been in slow motion.  Nothing can be done with dispatch once the run is over.  Not only am I sore, but my whole body is drained from fuel depletion and some dehydration.  This does get better – after weeks of consistent Sunday long runs.

They must be done.  There’s no shortcut to marathon training.  If you don’t do the miles, you’ll be sorry come race day.  So after a training outage blamed on a foot injury, I am starting the climb back up to serious training.  My weight is up, my pace is slow.  It’s time to improve and the one things that accomplishes this is consistent running.

I’ll be running the MDI marathon in October (as originally planned prior to the injury) but only as a training run.  There are no expectations this year.  I will have to run easily and well within my limitations.  However, if the winter treats me right, we should have a good spring marathon.
