When planning a wedding there are some aspects that make me so excited and choosing a dress is one of them. I decided years ago that my mom was going to make my dress. She made my prom gown junior year (it was beautiful) and I knew she could make almost anything I choose. On Thursday my mom was driving down to Massachusetts to visit my aunt and stopped to have lunch with me in Portland. We decided to go to a bridal gown store, just try on some of the dresses and get some ideas. We walked into the store rather clueless and found ourselves in a sea of white and off white frills. One of the women finally fished us out of the taffeta and showed us the gown catalog and the fun began. We were the only ones in the store and were making those girls work; we chose about a dozen dresses to try on. Before I could try anything on, I needed to get wrapped and strapped into corsets, slips and heels. Finally I was zipped into the first dress. Even though it was not quite what I have in mind for my wedding, once I saw myself in the mirror I found myself holding my breath and smiling. It was such a surprise to see myself in those gowns. I have always been a girl who loves dresses and getting all dolled up but the first time in a wedding dress is different. Every time I came out of the dressing room I was shocked that I was the one in the mirror wearing a wedding gown. I tried on dresses of all silhouettes and there were defiantly details on a few that we loved. During this hour and a half, the dress I want for my wedding was completely coming into mind for both my mom and I. Once our minds were completely spinning with trains, veils, pick-ups and beading we got ready to go. As we were leaving my mom and I agreed that was too much fun just to do once. Later that evening my mom called me from my aunts and we decided that in a few weeks my aunt would meet us in Portland and we would go to the other bridal shops and spend a weekend trying on gowns. I never would have thought that trying on wedding gowns would have been such a wonderful and emotional experience. I just can’t wait to do it again. Now I should get thinking of less fun things like cutting down my guest list by 50 people.
