STONINGTON — Stonington Sea Products has announced the launch of a new product line of smoked Atlantic salmon that is hormone and antibiotic free.

In a move that General Manager Richard Penfold calls “a positive step for the environment and customers,” the company will introduce its Scottish cure cold smoked salmon as well as its hot smoked roasted salmon with new green labels that identify the product as antibiotic free.

The new line will come in 4- and 8-ounce packs and will be carried by Whole Foods Market stores in New England as part of the company’s program encouraging consumers to make the best environmental choices.

Stonington Sea Products will also make the product available through its Web site, stoningtonseafood.com, and other retail stores.

“The effort to support newly emerging sustainable fish farming practices in the marine environment is an important one,” Penfold said. And, though there is popular demand for organic products, Penfold points out “there is currently no recognized U.S. or world certification for organic seafood.”

With the launch of its new sustainable farm-raised product, Penfold said the company is reinforcing its commitment to be “in the forefront of the industry when it comes to setting quality and product standards.”
