ELLSWORTH — At least three Hancock County residents have been the victims of theft as a result of the Hannaford security breach in which the grocer’s customers debit and credit card numbers were illegally accessed through its computer systems.

A Sullivan woman called the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department to report that her debit card had been used in Mexico.

“She stated her card was involved in the recent Hannaford security breach,” said Deputy Jeff Turcotte. The woman has gotten her money back from the bank, he said.

Deputy Shane Campbell took a complaint Monday from a Franklin woman who just realized that over $400 had been stolen from her account. The theft occurred in Brazil.

Deputy Chris Thornton took a complaint Monday as well from someone who has lost over $500.

The breach has affected customers at stores throughout New England and New York state, as well as certain independent stores in the Northeast that carry Hannaford products.

In a statement released from Hannaford corporate offices in Scarborough, the company assured its customers that no personal information, such as names or addresses, was accessed or obtained.

The grocery chain said it is cooperating with credit and debit card issuers to protect customers who may be affected by the theft.

Hannaford became aware of unusual credit card activity on Feb. 27 and immediately started a comprehensive investigation, according to the press release.

Bank officials advise Hannaford customers who use online banking services to check their bank statements and immediately contact their bank if they find any transactions they haven’t made.
