The last few weeks have been and continue to be a beehive of activity for the Woodlawn Croquet Program and a cornucopia of croquet happeings for our avid Hancock County players. In the week of June 18, Ben Rothman, founding member of Woodlawn Croquet, teamed up with his uncle Larry Stettner of Manset to offer the Ultimate Croquet School for 12 players. They eagerly lapped up instruction provided by this young croquet champion and have been hitting the courts practically from sunrise to sunset ever since. Ben is off to Jollly Old England, to play for the US. vs. Great Britain in the cross Altantic competition known as the Solomon Cup. But there will be plenty of action in the coming weeks right here. too. On Thursday, June 26 the first ever Maine/ New Hampshire State Croquet Championships will get underway at the Woodlawn championship sized court. Preliminary play in three divisions or "flights" will continue through Saturday, and the finals will take place on Sunday .Play proceeds from 8 to 5 every day, with the finals in the A flight taking place on Sunday at 12:30 as the finale of the tournament. Stanley Subaru of Trenton is a sponsor ot the tournament ,and has provided almost 200 bottles of water for players and spectators The public is invited to come on out and see what this is all about, and while you are there you can pick up information about the croquet program.
Meanwhile, potential new players have been flocking to the free Saturday introductory classes at Woodlawn. In July the free introductory class will be offered on the first and third Saturday, July 2 and 16. In each case there will be a follow up class on the 2nd and fourth Saturday respectively. Classes run from 10 Am to 12:30 and all equipment is provided. Call Perry Mattson at 667-9335 to sign up . Be part of the happening yourself! Still more activity for new players is scheduld for every Tuesday afternoon, 3- 5 PM at Woodlawn in July, where players wil be taught to play golf croquet for a fee of 5.00, and can begin to play immediately. The arrival of golf croquet guru Randall McAndrews will also mark the onset of our summer golf croquet tournament series in which newcomers can participate and compete for prizes while just plain having tons of fun and meeting some of Hancock county's growing cadre of Croquet Enthusiasts
