GOULDSBORO — A public hearing will be held Thursday, Aug. 7, at the town office to discuss a proposed ordinance that would require homeowners to pay a sticker fee for each garbage bag.
The hearing is scheduled for 7 p.m. Preliminary discussions are that the sticker price would be $1.50 for a 40-pound bag. Tags would be sold at the town office. The ordinance was drafted by the Gouldsboro Solid Waste Committee, which presented it to the Board of Selectmen July 24. A request was made by selectmen for the committee to clarify what will be done with garbage that is put in commercial bins. Gouldsboro households put out about 34 pounds of garbage each week, or the equivalent of nearly one ton every year, according to the committee. The town’s expenditure for solid waste disposal is currently $292,490, or 23 percent of the municipal budget. Under the proposed plan, Gouldsboro would continue to have curbside pickup of garbage and recycling, but there would be no charge for recycling. Selectmen a year ago instructed the Solid Waste Committee to find a way to reduce the solid waste disposal budget by 25 percent. |
