PROSPECT — Authorities were still searching Wednesday morning for the body of a 14-year-old Searsport High School freshman from Stockton Springs who reportedly jumped off the Penobscot Narrows Bridge Tuesday afternoon.

At about 3 p.m. Tuesday, the Waldo County Communications Center received calls from witnesses who reported seeing a “man” jump off the bridge.

Officers from the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office and Stockton Springs Police Department responded, as did rescue crews from Stockton Springs, Prospect and Bucksport.

According to police, a witness advised officers that he was traveling in the northbound lane of the bridge when the vehicle in front of him stopped at about the middle of the bridge. He said the driver of the stopped vehicle got out and jumped from the bridge into the Penobscot River more than 100 feet below.

Another witness, who was standing in the parking lot of the bridge observatory, said he observed a “man” go into the water.

The Coast Guard boat Guardian, a Marine Patrol boat and boats crewed by the Prospect and Bucksport fire departments searched the water.

A Coast Guard helicopter and Marine Patrol aircraft joined in the search efforts.

The search was suspended at about 7 p.m. Tuesday and resumed Wednesday morning.

The Maine State Police Dive Team is assisting in recovery efforts.

“Officers have [met] and continue to meet with family members of the young male,” according to a press release from the Waldo County Sheriff’s Department.
