Downeast.net Customers without Service Print E-mail

ELLSWORTH — Customers of Downeast.net are worried their Internet provider may have suspended operations or gone out of business without notification.

Downeast.net users began reporting loss of Internet and e-mail service starting last Wednesday, Nov. 26.

Those who called one Downeast.net customer service phone line discovered the line was out of service. A toll-free customer service phone number connected callers to an automated message system for Arcus Digital. Messages left there were not returned. Arcus Digital is owned by a former owner of Downeast.net.

Downeast.net Internet access was launched in Ellsworth in 1995.

A press release on the company’s Web site stated that the business was sold to Waterville-based Jordan Networks Inc. in August 2007. Jordan Networks was unavailable for comment.

1. Finding the owners
Matthew Baya
I posted about this in my blog the other day tracing the ownership to the Jordan Networks owners and even found the myspace page for 2 of them. Anyone with a phone book should be able to get their home phone number.

Business practices like this, shutting down with no notice, leaving people without a service and a functional e-mail address they've used for many years, are unacceptable. I realize finances may have required this shutdown but the honorable thing to do would have been to notify customers of the impending shutdown in order to give them time to find new e-mail addresses and ISPs.

Downeast.net customers deserve at least an apology and an explanation and ideally those who had prepaid need to be reimbursed for the services that were not delivered.

3. Downeast.Net is back in service.

Working with Jean and Don McKillop (founders of Downeast.net), myself, and another local company (Airolink.net) we have restored service for Downeast.net users. Jordan Networks is now officially out of the picture as of today. Please see the downeast.net website for more details and status updates. We didn't cause this problem, but we are now picking up the pieces and are committed to ensuring good service for all customers and will honor all pre-paid accounts.
