Propane Believed Cause Of Hancock House Fire Print E-mail
Thursday, January 08, 2009

HANCOCK — The Hancock Fire Department suspects a fire that destroyed a Coffin Road home Jan. 4 may have been triggered by a propane heater.

“It was the only thing that was on, other than the electricity,” said Fire Chief Christopher Holmes.

The two-story wood frame home is owned by Bob LaForge, who is wintering in Florida with his wife, Holmes said.

He said the call came in at 4:22 a.m., but the home was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.

Holmes said the owners left a propane heater on low to keep the pipes from freezing.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating.

Crews from the Hancock Volunteer Fire Department were joined at the scene by firefighters from Sorrento, Sullivan, Franklin and Eastbrook, with crews from Lamoine and Ellsworth standing by.
