HANCOCK — Arthur Morison and Rich Malaby have announced their write-in candidacies for the Hancock seat on the newly formed Regional School Unit 24 (RSU 24) board. The election for the RSU board will be held Feb. 12 in Hancock, Ellsworth, Franklin, Lamoine, Mariaville, Steuben, Gouldsboro, Sorrento, Sullivan, Winter Harbor, Eastbrook and Waltham. The 14-member board will include three representatives from the city of Ellsworth and one each from the 11 towns in Hancock and Washington counties that are part of the new RSU. Morison, 48, and his family moved to Maine four and a half years ago. He is a graduate of the Boston Conservatory of Music and is a teacher, actor and writer. His wife, Dr. Amy Tan, is a surgeon at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital and Blue Hill Memorial Hospital. Morison, who has a daughter in kindergarten at Hancock Grammar School, said he wants to help make the transition to the new RSU 24 as smooth as possible for the communities involved. At the same time, he said, he would like to help secure the best resources for staff and students at Hancock Grammar School. Malaby, owner of the Crocker House Inn, served on the Hancock School Board, the Reorganization Planning Committee that drafted the plan for RSU 24, and is secretary on the board at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital. His daughter, Megan, 13, is in the eighth grade at Hancock Grammar School. Malaby said the most significant challenge facing RSU 24 is that many of the towns involved are on the shoreline, which means property values are high. “Our RSU is coastal, which means we receive significantly less than the per-pupil average the state hands out,” he said. “We’re dealing with declining state support. The biggest problem is going to be the budget.” |
